Equilibrium moisture content is the single factor that determines whether a wood floor stays flat, tight, and beautiful for decades or fails within months of installation. CLīMIT monitors the conditions that drive EMC, continuously, so you always know before you install.

Wood is hygroscopic. It continuously absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air until it reaches equilibrium with its environment. That equilibrium point is EMC.
RH is the primary driver of EMC. A room at 30% RH will pull moisture out of wood. A room at 70% RH will push moisture into it. The wood moves in response, no matter what.
Temperature affects how much moisture air can hold, which in turn affects the RH and the resulting EMC. Hot, humid jobsites are more dangerous than the numbers suggest.
Wood must acclimate to the installed space's conditions before it's laid. Rushing this step is one of the most common and most costly mistakes in flooring installation.
Target EMC range for most hardwood species in climate-controlled spaces
Change in EMC causes roughly 1/4" movement per foot of wood across the grain
Of major hardwood manufacturers require documented site conditions for warranty coverage
Whether the site is too wet or too dry, wood flooring installed outside the target EMC range will move. That movement shows up as defects, and the contractor is held responsible.
When ambient humidity is too high, wood absorbs moisture and swells. Boards installed under these conditions will cup, crown, buckle, or push against each other once the space is conditioned.
Common Outcomes
When the jobsite is too dry, wood releases moisture and shrinks. Flooring installed in dry conditions will gap, crack, and split once normal humidity levels are restored.
Common Outcomes
Always verify the specific requirements in your product's technical data sheet.
EMC-related failures are almost always attributed to the installer. Rework costs 3 to 5 times the original installation and is rarely covered by the manufacturer.
Every major hardwood flooring manufacturer requires documented proof that conditions were within spec before, during, and after installation. No documentation, no warranty.
Wood installed at the wrong EMC cannot always be salvaged. A single failed installation can wipe out the margin from multiple successful jobs.
General contractors and building owners hold subcontractors responsible for flooring failures. Without a timestamped log, you have no way to prove conditions were acceptable.
CLīMIT sensors monitor temperature and relative humidity around the clock, automatically calculating EMC and alerting you the moment conditions move outside your specified range.
